Patrick Ekeng: Doctor charged with manslaughter of Cameroon international

Patrick Ekeng

The Romanian public prosecutor has charged emergency doctor Elena Duta with the manslaughter of former Cameroon midfielder Patrick Ekeng.
Ekeng, 26, collapsed during a league match for Dinamo Bucharest in May and died of heart failure.
The prosecutor said Duta, the emergency medical specialist in the ambulance which took Ekeng to hospital, made no attempt to resuscitate the player.
Hospital staff were unable to resuscitate him on his arrival.
An autopsy showed the player was suffering from multiple serious heart problems, but the Bucharest prosecutor said: "Even if among Patrick Ekeng's causes of death were the cardiac problems he suffered from, by her unjustified inaction Elena Duta removed any chance of survival.
"She did not evaluate the footballer's state of health and made no attempt at resuscitation."
The prosecutor's office quoted forensic scientists as saying 95% of people with similar heart problems survive cardiac arrest if defibrillation is administered within 60 seconds.
"The chances of survival drop by 5.5% with every minute," prosecutors said.
Ekeng fell to the floor in the 70th minute of a televised Romanian league match between Dinamo and Viitorul.
He was pronounced dead in hospital two hours later.

Istanbul Airport suspected ISIS bombers were Uzbek, Russian, Kyrgyz - Turkish official

Three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers who killed 43 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul's main airport this week were Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals, a Turkish government official said on Thursday June 30.

The suicide bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. At least 239 people were wounded in the attack.

According to Reuters, the Turkey official who confirmed the terrorists' nationalities, declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Forensics teams had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.
"A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process," one of the officials said.
Interior Minister Efkan Ala told parliament that evidence continued to point to ISIS responsibility and that the death toll had risen to 43, of whom 19 were foreigners. Ala said the identity and nationality of one of the bombers had been determined but did not comment further.

The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said the Russian bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya. Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper named him as Osman Vadinov and said he had come from Raqqa, the heart of Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria.

The Russian interior ministry said it was checking information about Vadinov. A spokesman for Kyrgyzstan's state security service said it was investigating, while the Uzbek security service had no immediate comment.

Brexit will limit financial grants to Nigeria, others, says Don

Persident Buhari and David Cameron

A don, Mr Sam Goddorms, on Wednesday said that the U.K. exiting the European Union (EU) bloc would affect international financial grants given to Nigeria and other developing countries.
Goddorms, a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, University of Jos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that the exit of U.K. was “unfavourable’’ to Nigeria.
“With U.K. leaving the EU, most of the developmental grants being handed over to Nigeria will reduce drastically.
“Now that this seems to be playing out, U.K. will focus more on rebuilding their own country and coping with the current challenges, than helping other developing societies,’’ he said.
According to him, exit from the European Union bloc will streamline the volume of exports from Nigeria to European markets as U.K. is a channel to European markets.
Goddorms said that it was not over yet, adding that another round of referendum would determine if the initial stand of U.K. would finally scale through.
“Now that this referendum is taking place, Nigeria’s foreign policy makers and government need to reposition appropriately to benefit from any of the stance, ‘’ the don said.
The political scientist, however, said that the nation’s interest should be paramount in the minds of the foreign policy makers.
NAN reports that no fewer than 33 million people from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar, had their say in a circumstance where Britain voted to leave the EU.

Strike: Oyo, labour, make progress on negotiation

Senator Abiola Ajimobi

The Oyo State Government and striking workers in the state appear to be making some progress in the ongoing negotiations to end the strike action which has entered its third week.
This is sequel to the constitution of  a joint 14-member negotiation committee with the labour union to address lingering issues responsible for the delay in the payment of outstanding salaries and pension, which led to the ongoing industrial action.
The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Toye Arulogun, who disclosed this at a press briefing at the end of the maiden state executive council meeting, presided over by Governor Abiola Ajimobi said the committee comprised seven representatives each from the side of state government and the labour union.
Listed as members on the government side are Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli; Commissioner for Finance and Budget, Mr. Bimbo Adekanmbi; Head of Service, Mr. Soji Eniade; as well as permanent secretaries in the ministries of finance and budget; establishment and service matters, local government and chieftaincy matters, as well as the Accountant-General.
The Deputy National President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Peters Adeyemi, will lead the labour team, which included NLC State Vice Chairman, Comrade Bayo Sodo, Comrade Kofo Abayomi, Comrade A.O Akinfenwa, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, Comrade Nafisat Balogun and Remi Adepoju.
Arulogun said: “The maiden executive council meeting under the leadership of Governor Ajimobi agreed to the formation of the committee to find quick solution to the labour issues and other matters relating to the proposed education initiative.
“Members of the committee would look into the best way possible to offset the accrued workers’ salaries and consider the memoranda so far submitted on the proposed education development initiative, saying: “It is in the best interest of both parties to find an amicable solution to the issues to restore industrial harmony to the state.”
The commissioner used the opportunity to reassure the people of the state that the Ajimobi-led administration would not renege on his electoral promises aimed at changing the face of the state and fortunes of its people for the better.
He also quoted the governor as having directed the commissioners to go back to their various ministries and carry out radical reforms that would be beneficial to the people of the state.

mourinho assures united loyals of going back to the 'sir alex ferguson way' next season

Jose Mourinho has promised to use ‘Fergie’s DNA’ to bring back the glory days to Manchester United.
New boss Mourinho wants to build a team with the same attacking philosophy legendary predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson demanded in his time at Old Trafford, and is determined to embrace that style.
The Special One has spoken to senior United players such as Wayne Rooney, David De Gea and Michael Carrick and outlined his plans for the coming season.
And Mourinho made it clear there's going to be a departure from the slow, pedestrian build-up play that blighted their previous manager Louis van Gaal’s time in charge

David Moyes also had a disastrous spell at the Manchester giants, and the Old Trafford faithful have become frustrated with the style of football that's been served up since Fergie retired after the 2012-2013 season.
There were also fears about the hiring of Mourinho, because he gained a reputation at Chelsea for playing with a pragmatic style rather than flair.
The 53-year-old has also outlined in meetings and those phone calls with players a determination to embrace the United philosophy of bringing youngsters up through the ranks.

Rock-star striker Ibrahimovich is also poised to move to Old Trafford on a Bosman

It is a clear message which will delight United fans eager for a return to the good old days of the Fergie era.
The Scot won 38 trophies in 26 years at the club, including two European Cups, and Mourinho wants to build a similar lasting legacy for himself.
He made it clear he wants players with pace so United can go at opponents and deliver a thrilling style of football.
The fans voiced their frustrations with Van Gaal last season, even though the Dutchman ended the club’s three-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup in May.
They were fed-up with Van Gaal’s dull, ponderous style of play and they regularly chanted: “Attack! Attack! Attack-attack-attack!”
It puts Mourinho on course for a showdown with Manchester City’s own incoming boss Pep Guardiola, and old La Liga rival, who is known for his attacking brand of football.
United are keen on Borussia Dortmund’s goal-scoring midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with rival suitors Arsenal now fearing the Armenia international will go to Old Trafford.
Mourinho will also sign superstar Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer this summer once his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires.

Photos: Man accused of killing his 20-year-old girlfriend

A fresh police recruit charged with murdering his 20-year-old girlfriend appeared in court on Thursday, June 23 for his third and final hearing at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Cambodia.

The trial resumed from a postponement last December when the court ordered a reinvestigation of the case due to a lack of evidence.

Hong Kalydin, 28, was arrested and charged with murder accompanied by torture in October 2014, a week after the body of his girlfriend Song Davin was found floating on the Tonle Sap river. The court heard a defence attorney witness who claimed to have seen the victim in a nightclub two days before she was found dead.
"On the night of October 5, I went to Mekong Nightclub with my sisters and saw five girls and one slim guy sitting inside. On October 7, a body was found on the river. People asked me and three other guys to take the body [out]. Then I saw it was one of the girls I had seen in the nightclub," said witness You Maliki, who works as a fisherman.
When the judge asked if he could identify Kalydin, Maliki said,
"No, it was not him who I saw in the nightclub."
The prosecutor, judge and victim’s lawyer all found his account suspect and pressed him on the details. Police stated that DNA testing revealed no semen on the victim’s body. Presiding judge Veng Huoth said the verdict would be announced on an unspecified date due to the complexity of the case.

Jamie Vardy: Leicester & England striker agrees new contract

England striker and Arsenal target Jamie Vardy has agreed a new deal with Premier League champions Leicester.
The Foxes said the 29-year-old, whose goals helped the club claim a shock title success last season, will sign an extended four-year contract.
"Both parties hope this announcement will end recent speculation regarding Jamie's future," a club statement said.
Vardy was the subject of a reported £20m bid from Premier League rivals Arsenal before the start of Euro 2016.
That bid activated a release clause in his contract, with the Gunners offering him a deal reported to be worth £120,000 a week.
Leicester responded with an offer said to be worth £100,000.
Vardy, who joined the Foxes from non-league Fleetwood Town for £1m in 2012, had already signed a new three-year deal with the club in February.
Former Leicester defender Matthew Upson, who also played for Arsenal, said some might view Vardy's decision as a "strange" one.
However, the ex-England centre-half said that Arsenal's style of play might not have suited his former team-mate.
"When you look at how both teams play, there is such a contrast in style," said Upson. "Arsenal have a very methodical build-up, they like to play through the middle, on the floor, break lines with passes and are very clever and intricate."
Leicester, added Upson, played in a way that enabled Vardy to shine and become the star he is now.
"He's played some fabulous football in a team that really does cater to his strengths," said Upson. "So I can really understand the decision he made."
Upson added that Leicester had "laid a marker down" by holding on to Vardy and said it might convince other key players, like winger Riyad Mahrez and midfielder N'Golo Kante, to stay, too..
The news Vardy had decided to stay also delighted Gary Lineker.
The former Foxes striker tweeted: "A show of loyalty from @vardy7 and a show of ambition from @LCFC is to be applauded."
But Vardy's decision means that former club Fleetwood miss out on a lucrative payday courtesy of a sell-on clause in his contract.
Vardy is currently on duty with England at Euro 2016 in France and scored in the 2-1 win over Wales in the group stage.
Roy Hodgson's side eventually finished second in Group B to make it through to the last 16, where they will face Iceland on Monday.

Antoine Griezmann: Atletico Madrid midfielder signs new deal

Antoine Griezmann

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has signed a new deal with the Champions League finalists, keeping him at the club until 2021.
The 25-year-old is currently playing with France at Euro 2016 and scored for Les Bleus in the 2-0 win over Albania.
Griezmann, who scored 32 goals in 54 appearances last season, has been linked with a move away from Madrid, including to the Premier League.
Last week Atletico agreed to sign striker Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica.
Griezmann told the club website: "I'm very satisfied, very happy to keep belonging to this family and this project.
"I want to improve every year, and the club, the coaches and my team-mates can help me to reach this goal."
