Two-year-old Kylen Shangreaux was beaten to death by his mother after giving her a 'sideways look'

She said she initially got angry with the boy after discovering he had wet the bed and then gave her a "sideways look," the Rapid City Journal reported.

The mum also claimed he called her "Angie" - the name of his aunt who had cared for him before Shangreaux won a custody battle in June 2016 - a month before his death.

Shangreaux submitted a plea agreement on Monday and provided a written statement in which she admitted drinking alcohol and taking pain medication before fatally attacking her own son.

She said she only stopped beating him when she "saw that he appeared different and realized how badly she had injured him," according to the statement.

After the attack, she called her mother Sonya Dubray who tried to get Kylen to drink some apple juice but he collapsed and soiled himself.

The pair are said to have cleaned up the blood and faeces from the boy and the house before calling for help.

The boy was taken to hospital but he was already dead by the time he arrived on July 28, 2016.

He had suffered a fractured skull and torn scrotum, while doctors also discovered he was covered in bite marks and there were new and old bruises on 70 per cent of his skin.

A post-mortem examination found Kylen's cause of death was blunt force trauma and the bruising may have contributed to his death because the blood pooling at the bruises may have deprived his organs of sufficient blood.

Prosecutors say Shangreaux faces life in prison after indicating she will admit second degree murder.
